Microparticles matter — they can make up to 99% of what we breathe.1

The smaller the microparticle, the more difficult it is to capture and the longer it stays in the air (or our lungs).1

  • A yellow filter pattern labelled 'Microparticle Performance Rating - MPR'.

Scientists at 3M believe that MERV only tells part of the story, so we created a different measurement — Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR). This rating includes microscopic particles not visible to the naked eye — particles that are not even measured on the MERV scale until it reaches MERV 11.

Exclusive Filtrete™ Brand filter technology focuses on capturing the tiniest particles – between 0.3 and 1 micron (µm) in size. Filtrete™ Healthy Living Filters capture bacteria, cough and sneeze particles, and even viruses.2

  • A grey filter pattern labelled 'Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value - MERV'.

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) is the industry standard for measuring how well a heating and cooling system’s filter captures particles. MERV air filter ratings range from 1 (least efficient captureability) to 16 (very efficient).

Filters with a MERV rating of 1-4 mostly filter out dust, lint and pollen among other larger, common particles — they do very little to trap small microparticles.

Many other rating systems like MERV do not consider the air resistance created by a filter. High air resistance makes your home’s heating and cooling less efficient, and can waste energy and may even damage your system. Filtrete™ Brand Filters are designed to deliver premium air filtration with low lifetime airflow resistance — this makes it ideal for your heating and cooling system.

Make sure your air filter is measured by MPR

The higher the MPR, the more microparticles your filter will capture as you run your heating or cooling system. From remodeling a home to adopting a new pet, each home has its unique filtration requirements. We can help you find the filter right for your home.

    Understanding particle sizes

Filtrete™ Brand technology makes it possible to capture the tiniest particles – between 0.3 and 1 micron in size — including bacteria and viruses through select high-performing filters within the portfolio.

The MPR system is the superior standard.2

The MPR indicates the filters ability to capture tiny particles between 0.3 and 1 micron in size. The higher the MPR, the more microparticles — such as pollen, pet dander, smoke, bacteria and viruses — your filter will capture.1,2
